Books as help for life

Under the motto “Monument in School”, Ulrich Hausmann and Reinhard Käsinger initiated the school year project “Books as an Aid to Life”, sponsored by the Foundation for Monument Protection, to familiarise pupils with the historical library at Neubeuern Castle as a place of learning and to discover the reading of literary classics for themselves. They followed the example of Countess Ottonie Degenfeld, who had the famous writer Hugo von Hofmannsthal personally prescribe her reading therapy in the run-up to the First World War in order to find solace in literature and gain new courage for her difficult life as a young, disabled widow. And indeed, thanks to the recommended books, she found her way back to life and supported her sister-in-law in founding the Schloss Neubeuern country school, which was established in 1925.

Our historical library as a place of learning and study.

The pupils explored this authentic reading therapy by combing through the old books for annotations and notes based on Hofmannsthal’s recommendations, checking the marked quotations for their topicality and discussing the “book as an aid to life” from today’s perspective. In addition to this individual appropriation of literary works, they created a poetic calendar and put together a small exhibition, which will be presented as part of the summer festival.
